An online music store is a virtual music shop where you can see, select and buy the music files that you required. There are thousands of online stores available in internet now which offer the music of your song on a per song or subscription basis. There are music stores which also offer streaming services where you don’t actually have to buy the song to listen to it.
The history of online music availability starts from 1993 when Rob Lord, Jeff Patterson and Jon Luini from the University of California created first free onlinemusic archive named Internet Underground Music Archive. Then some music stores started to appear online by the end of the decade. They arranged some thousands ofsongs in a specific order and the user could listen to the audio or video clipping they want and buy for a fixed price the price was ranging from for individual songs to for albums in the early stages. Today iTunes, Universal Music group, Sony Music Entertainments etc are some of the major names in the online music industry.
The two decades since the birth of online music store, have witnessed several changes in the field. Many new kind of services are available that allow the Musicians to make their music reach the audience without the help of a third person. The popularity of online music industry is so much that the online music store iTunes surpassed Wal-Mart, the biggest music retailer in physical format. There are many things to be given attention when you purchase music online. Thereare two different options available. One is to purchase by single song or record, which suits casual admirers since it costs you less and you can keep the music with you as written to a CD or MP3 format. Pure Tracks, Wall mart music downloads etc falls to this category of online stores. The second option is subscription for a time period like one month for a reasonable fixed rate (an average -)) and having access to unlimited number of songs in that time.
It will be cheaper for frequent users and you can also listen to sample music before you buy it. But you can’t hear it after the subscription ends and also you can’t burn it to a CD without buying it. URGE, Download Zone, Napster, F.Y.E etc are some examples. SO if you are going for subscription make sure that this service has the collection of songs that you intend to listen. There are also services which specialize in different genres, like devotional music or classical music etc. If you need to purchase some songs in a subscription and burn to a CD, you need to pay an extra amount for that besides the subscription charge. But there are certain sites like E-music which allows you to buy a fixed number of songs as part of subscription without the above mentioned extra charge. And also make sure before you buy a file that its audio format is compatible with your system.
